Far Out
Popular culture has swept through the 1970's era raping and pillaging the decade in the same way that the white man spread small pocks to the natives completely wiping them out. This angers me! Although not even alive during this period, from what I have been told and pictures I have seen, this was a time filled with great clothes, beautiful language, and amazing music. This was the era of bell bottoms, big collars, tight tee-shirts, and hush puppies. Phrases still lingered in the air from the sixties such as groovy, dig this, heady, and far-out. The music scene was flourishing with bands such as The Clash, The Greatful Dead, The Sex Pistols, and Zepplin. Now it seems that everytime someone shouts out a comment like groovy they are immediately labelled a "try hard" doing their best to fit into this American Eagle society. When a person slips on a pair of bells bottoms everyone assumes they are an Abercrome and Fitch disciple. Worst of all is the fact that a person who listens to a band from the 70's is immediately judged as someone who is putting forth a last ditch effort to fit into a Gap dominated world that perverted an innocent decade that was once (if not clean) semi clean. More acid (mind the pun) is poured into this wound as tv's "That 70's Show" has stirred up this easily influenced crowd to scream for more more more of the same, wanting Gap to pump out more retro clothing, and the radio to play more classic rock. (Disclaimer: I love "that 70s show" ). I am saying all of this because I hate how far things go. I hate that when I see retro clothing I am no longer as attracted to it as I once was because everyone is dressed in it. Its no longer as special to listen to classic 70's music on a rare vinyl as it once was because everyone does. Dropping a good seventies line does not even hold the same praise it once did as it is no longer funny but common language. I wish it were not like this, but the reality is that it is. It will continue to happen as the 80's are being violated as we speak. Sorry for the rant, this was just on my mind.So today I wore bell bottoms with a retro t shirt and some hush puppies....just kidding.
No progress on my paper. Hopefully this week!

brilliant. absolutely insightful. you spoke to me where i am at. so how do we escape the pop-culture raping of a previous culture we are attracted to? or can we do anything about it?
do we just move on? leave it? or do what we want despite pop-culture?- the wash commented at 2:45 PM~
